High-Stakes Koi Acquisitions: Byer Koi Farm Secures Elite Dianichi Kohaku and Showa Females to Strengthen Our Bloodlines
The two best nisai in today's Dianichi auction, are coming to Byer Koi Farm!
We will be making very good use of them here.
Those Yen prices are the auction starting price. I wish they were the purchase price, but this level of extremely special koi from a koi farm that stands alone with Sakai as the two best koi farms in the world, come with a very substantial price. Like with Oakly, our female chagoi parent, and Opaline, our Mukashi Ogon parent, and several Kohaku's that have come before like Sharkey who was from Momotaro; we take risk and invest significantly in our brood fish prioritising key varieties like Kohaku and Showa. With 4 Dianichi kohaku females coming to our farm, we stand a really good chance that at least one of them will help us start a new Kohaku line and build on our already very strong reputation with Kohaku.
Our Kohaku brood fish female line up has not been performing as required over the last 2 years and bolstering our brood stocks in that area has been a top priority for this autumn harvest season.
I was planning to wait until February when I will be in Japan again before securing the new stock, but with Dianichi, the only way to purchase from them is via auction. So, that's what we've done.
We've secured 4 Kohaku nisai females, and 1 Showa female too. These will hopefully be ready for spawning the year after next. If we are lucky, we might get some eggs from one of these koi next year. Lets hope so!
Our early years success with Kohaku spawnings where we learned our trade were based around a breeding set which included Dianichi Kohaku males. So we are thrilled to have secured a good number of females from Dianichi this time.
Dianichi Showa is the base from which many Niigata breeders have started their own Showa lines, and we've secured the best Showa in today's auction for us to take that same path.
Lets all keep our fingers crossed that these new acquisitions spawn well, and produce fantastic nishikigoi!
Check out the quality in both of these koi , in these videos:
Check out the texture from this koi's fukurin; that's the skin around the scales giving them a 3D presence. In a nisai kohaku, that's really impressive. I'm in the process of writing a Kohaku variety spotlight, which will follow the Showa and Ki Utsuri spotlights already on the website. And this koi will be a great case study in showing all the elements you'd want in a dream Kohaku.
Check out the body volume on this powerful koi. The sumi quality is exquisite! Look at the sections where the sumi has come through; like on the motoguru (black in the base of the pectoral fins), and around some of the scales on the body, and also on the head too. Amazing! A deep glossy back. Once the sumi comes through fully, it will form a balanced pattern with the red and white opposing across the body. But, I'm most interested in the sumi quality, the skin quality and the shape. All are at the top level.
I am very much looking forward to getting this pair into a spawning vat!
